Nameri – Wilderness by the Jia Bhoroli

Bird calls, forest trails, and riverside serenity

Nameri – A Riverside Wilderness in Assam

Brief:
Nestled at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in Sonitpur district, Assam, Nameri National Park is a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers. Spread across 200 sq. km, the park is known for its pristine forests, crystal-clear Jia Bhoroli river, and rich biodiversity. Unlike the busier Kaziranga, Nameri offers a more serene and raw wilderness experience, making it perfect for those who want to explore Assam’s natural beauty off the beaten track.

Description:
Nameri is a rare blend of adventure and tranquility. The Jia Bhoroli River, which flows through the park, is famous for river rafting, fishing (catch-and-release), and riverside treks. The forest itself is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, leopards, gaur, sambar, and more than 370 species of birds, making it a birdwatcher’s haven. Endangered species such as the white-winged wood duck and the golden mahseer (fish) are key highlights of the region.

Apart from its wildlife, Nameri offers visitors the chance to walk along jungle trails accompanied by forest guards—an experience very different from jeep safaris elsewhere. The eco-camps near the park provide a rustic yet comfortable stay, letting travelers stay close to nature. Nameri is not just a destination—it’s an immersion into the raw wilderness of Assam.

How to Reach Nameri

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Tezpur Airport (approx. 35 km), but it has limited connectivity. The major airport is Guwahati (IXA), 210 km away, which is well connected to India’s major cities. From there, taxis can be hired to Nameri.
  • By Train: The nearest major railway station is Rangapara North Junction (approx. 21 km). Tezpur Railway Station (35 km) is another nearby option. From there, taxis are available.
  • By Road: Nameri is well connected by road. Taxis are the most convenient option to reach the park from Tezpur (35 km, 1 hour), Guwahati (210 km, 5–6 hours), or Kaziranga (110 km, 3–4 hours).

Highlights & Must-Visit Places in Nameri

  • Jungle Trekking in Nameri: Unlike many national parks, Nameri allows walking safaris inside the forest, guided by armed forest guards. This gives visitors a close and thrilling experience of the wilderness.
  • Birdwatching Paradise: With over 370 species of birds, Nameri is a top spot for birdwatchers. Species like the white-winged wood duck, great hornbill, wreathed hornbill, ibisbill, and blue-naped pitta make it a dream destination for ornithologists and photographers.
  • River Rafting on Jia Bhoroli: A mild adventure activity, rafting down the Jia Bhoroli River lets you enjoy the scenic landscape, spot migratory birds, and experience the thrill of white waters (grade I–II rapids).
  • Eco-Camps at Nameri: Staying at rustic eco-camps such as Nameri Eco Camp enhances the wilderness experience. Surrounded by forests and river sounds, they offer a peaceful retreat close to nature.
  • Picnic by Jia Bhoroli: The riverbanks offer scenic picnic spots where travelers can relax, enjoy bird songs, and soak in the beauty of the park.

Very safe and well arranged trip with well trained and well behaved driver. My husband got injured at Rainbow Fall and I was little bit scared about how we would reach back to the hotel, but the Travelorr team supported us and took care of us. We returned to the hotel safely. Thank you so much for this memorable journey.”
