Home to living root bridges, waterfalls, and endless misty valleys

Cherrapunji (Sohra) – The Land of Living Root Bridges

Brief:
Cherrapunji, locally known as Sohra, is world-famous for its rainfall, breathtaking landscapes, and unique natural wonders. Often called one of the wettest places on Earth, this enchanting hill station in Meghalaya is a land of misty valleys, roaring waterfalls, mysterious caves, and vibrant Khasi traditions. With its untouched beauty and eco-friendly attractions, Cherrapunji is not just about heavy rains—it’s a place where nature unveils its most dramatic and pristine form.

Description:
Perched at an altitude of around 1,484 meters, Cherrapunji is a paradise for travelers who seek a blend of adventure, nature, and culture. The town is surrounded by soaring cliffs, lush plateaus, and endless green valleys that come alive during the monsoon. It is home to some of India’s tallest waterfalls such as Nohkalikai Falls and Seven Sisters Falls, along with fascinating caves like Mawsmai and Arwah, which showcase Meghalaya’s mystical underground world.

What makes Cherrapunji truly unique are the living root bridges, an extraordinary example of bio-engineering created by the Khasi tribe, with the Double Decker Root Bridge of Nongriat being the crown jewel. Beyond its natural beauty, Cherrapunji offers sweeping views of the Bangladesh plains, vibrant local culture, and treks through some of the most scenic landscapes in India. Whether it’s chasing waterfalls, exploring caves, or experiencing indigenous traditions, Cherrapunji promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Meghalaya.

Highlights & Must-Visit Places in Cherrapunji

  • Nohkalikai Falls: The tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai dramatically drops from a height of 1,115 feet into a striking turquoise pool below. Surrounded by towering cliffs and misty clouds, this waterfall is not only a natural wonder but also tied to a poignant local legend, making it one of Cherrapunji’s most iconic attractions.
  • Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang Falls): Cascading down limestone cliffs in seven parallel streams, this waterfall is a breathtaking sight, especially during the monsoon when it flows in full force. The falls symbolize the unity of the seven northeastern states, adding cultural significance to its natural grandeur.
  • Mawsmai Cave: A limestone cave filled with fascinating stalactites and stalagmites, offering a thrilling glimpse into Meghalaya’s underground world. Well-lit and relatively easy to navigate, it is an ideal cave exploration spot for both adventure seekers and families.
  • Double Decker Living Root Bridge (Nongriat): An extraordinary marvel of natural architecture, this two-tiered bridge is formed by the interwoven roots of rubber trees, carefully trained by the Khasi tribe over centuries. Reaching the bridge requires a trek of around 3,000 steps through lush valleys and streams, but the journey and the sight are both truly rewarding.
  • Arwah Cave: Known for its massive chambers, natural limestone formations, and fossils that date back millions of years, Arwah offers a more expansive and quieter experience compared to Mawsmai Cave. Its intricate rock formations make it a paradise for explorers and nature enthusiasts.
  • Eco Park: A beautifully landscaped park that provides sweeping views of deep gorges, waterfalls, and the distant plains of Bangladesh. It’s a perfect family-friendly spot where visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk amidst gardens and natural beauty.
  • Thangkharang Park: Perched on the edge of a cliff, this park offers panoramic views of the valley below, the meandering Kynrem Falls, and the unique giant rock formation known as KhohRamhah (Shiv Lingam Rock). It’s also home to a variety of indigenous plants and orchids.
  • Dainthlen Falls: A majestic waterfall surrounded by picturesque landscapes, Dainthlen is steeped in folklore about the slaying of a giant serpent. The combination of natural beauty and cultural storytelling makes it a must-visit.
  • MawkdokDympep Valley Viewpoint: Located en route to Cherrapunji, this viewpoint offers stunning views of a vast, verdant valley with cliffs and streams. It’s also a hub for adventure activities like zip-lining, making it a favorite stop for thrill-seekers and photographers alike.
