Dawki – The Crystal River Paradise

Where emerald waters and misty hills create timeless magic

Dawki – The Crystal River Paradise

Brief:
Dawki, a small border town in Meghalaya, has gained fame worldwide for the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, where boats appear to float on air. Located near the India–Bangladesh border, this charming town offers a unique mix of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences. Dawki is not just about its river—it’s also about scenic drives through lush valleys, hanging bridges, rolling Khasi hills, and the warm hospitality of the locals.

Description:
Nestled in the West Jaintia Hills, Dawki sits at an altitude of around 1,495 feet and serves as a gateway between India and Bangladesh. The highlight of Dawki is undoubtedly the Umngot River, often called Asia’s cleanest river, where boating feels surreal thanks to its glass-like transparency. Beyond the river, Dawki is known for its suspension bridge, adventurous camping sites, hidden waterfalls, and proximity to the Indo-Bangladesh trade border.

The journey to Dawki itself is spectacular—passing through deep valleys, forested hills, and mist-covered roads. With its blend of adventure activities, cross-border glimpses, and stunning natural beauty, Dawki has become one of Meghalaya’s must-visit destinations for both leisure and thrill-seeking travelers.

🚗 How to Reach Dawki

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi), about 90 km away, with limited connectivity. Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (around 200 km) is the nearest major airport, connected to most Indian cities. Taxis are available from Shillong or Guwahati to Dawki.
  • By Train: Dawki does not have a railway station. The closest station is Guwahati Railway Station (approx. 195 km). From there, one can take a taxi or shared cab to Shillong and then onward to Dawki.
  • By Road: Dawki is about 80 km from Shillong (2.5–3 hours by car). The drive is scenic, passing through rolling hills, valleys, and viewpoints such as MawkdokDympep Valley. Shared cabs and private taxis are easily available.

🌟 Highlights & Must-Visit Places in Dawki

  • Umngot River (Dawki River): Famous for its crystal-clear waters, boating here feels magical as boats appear to float in mid-air. Best visited between November and March when the river is at its clearest. It’s also a great spot for camping, fishing, and kayaking.
  • Dawki Suspension Bridge: Built in 1932 by the British, this steel suspension bridge spans the Umngot River and offers breathtaking views of the emerald-green waters below. Walking across it is both thrilling and scenic.

  • Indo-Bangladesh Border (Tamabil): A unique spot where visitors can see cross-border trade and glimpse life across the international border. A quick visit here offers cultural insights and photo opportunities.
  • Bangladesh Plains Viewpoints: On clear days, several viewpoints around Dawki offer panoramic views of the sprawling Bangladesh plains, creating a mesmerizing contrast against Meghalaya’s lush hills.

Very safe and well arranged trip with well trained and well behaved driver. My husband got injured at Rainbow Fall and I was little bit scared about how we would reach back to the hotel, but the Travelorr team supported us and took care of us. We returned to the hotel safely. Thank you so much for this memorable journey.”
