Lachen – The Abode of Snow

Gateway to Gurudongmar, where silence meets the Himalayas

Lachen – The Gateway to the High Himalayas

Brief:
Lachen, a quaint mountain village in North Sikkim, sits at an altitude of around 2,750 meters (9,000 ft). Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and pristine valleys, it is the starting point for journeys to Gurudongmar Lake and the Lachung Valley. Known for its raw Himalayan beauty and peaceful environment, Lachen is perfect for those seeking solitude, nature, and adventure.

Description:
Lachen, meaning “Big Pass” in Tibetan, is a traditional Sikkimese village with wooden houses, friendly locals, and untouched landscapes. Unlike the bustling towns of Gangtok or Darjeeling, Lachen retains its quiet charm, with fewer tourists and an authentic Himalayan village vibe.

The village is also the base for the Lachenpas, the local people who follow age-old traditions and warm hospitality. Beyond being the gateway to Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft), one of the highest lakes in the world, Lachen offers stunning alpine treks, monasteries, and breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga range. Its unspoiled natural beauty makes it one of the most unique destinations in Sikkim.

How to Reach Lachen

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 200 km away. From Bagdogra, taxis are available to Gangtok, and from Gangtok, another taxi ride (7-8 hours) takes you to Lachen.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), around 195 km away. Taxis are available to Gangtok, followed by a road trip to Lachen.
  • By Road: Lachen can only be reached by taxi from Gangtok (approx. 120 km, 7-8 hours). The route passes through winding mountain roads, rivers, and waterfalls, offering a scenic Himalayan drive.
