Its name means “Small Pass” in Tibetan, and like its twin village Lachen, it offers the perfect mix of scenic beauty, culture, and adventure.

Nestled at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers, Lachung is one of the most beautiful high-altitude villages in Sikkim. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and cascading streams, it feels like a scene straight out of a postcard. The village is inhabited by the Lachungpas, a friendly community known for their unique traditions and warm hospitality.

Lachung is best known as the base for exploring Yumthang Valley, famous for its rhododendron blooms in spring, and the Zero Point, where the road literally ends amid snow-covered landscapes. Beyond these, Lachung is also home to monasteries, hot springs, and apple orchards, making it a destination that combines spirituality, natural beauty, and rustic Himalayan charm.

How to Reach Lachung

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 200 km away. From Bagdogra, take a taxi to Gangtok, and from there, another taxi (6–7 hours) to Lachung.
  • By Train: The nearest station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 190 km away. Taxis are available to Gangtok, followed by a road trip to Lachung.
  • By Road:Lachung can only be reached by taxi from Gangtok (approx. 110 km, 6–7 hours). The route winds through forests, waterfalls, and mountain roads, making the journey itself a memorable experience.

  • Yumthang Valley (Valley of Flowers): The most famous attraction near Lachung, Yumthang Valley is a paradise of alpine meadows, hot springs, and rhododendron blooms (April–June). Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, it offers a magical landscape in every season.
  • Zero Point (Yumesamdong): Located at an altitude of over 15,000 ft, this is where the road literally ends, giving way to snow-covered terrain and majestic Himalayan peaks. It’s a thrilling experience to stand at the edge of civilization, with pristine snow all around.
  • Lachung Monastery: A peaceful monastery belonging to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism, it is adorned with colorful murals, prayer wheels, and fluttering flags. It offers a tranquil atmosphere and panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
  • Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary: Spread over 43 sq. km, this sanctuary is home to more than 40 species of rhododendrons, which paint the valley in vibrant colors during spring. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers.
  • Bhutan Falls & Naga Falls (en route): Cascading waterfalls on the way to Lachung add to the journey’s charm, offering perfect stops for photography and refreshment.
  • Hot Springs near Yumthang: Known for their therapeutic properties, these natural hot springs are rich in sulfur and provide a warm retreat amid cold mountain air.
  • Apple Orchards:Lachung is dotted with apple orchards, and during the fruiting season, the sight of red apples against a backdrop of snowy peaks is truly enchanting.
